(Xinhua) — A study conducted by the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Hong Kong (HKU) showed that both types of COVID-19 vaccines available in Hong Kong are very effective against severe disease and mortality caused by the virus.
The study released on Tuesday analyzed the effectiveness of the two vaccines offered in Hong Kong, Sinovac and Comirnaty, using data from COVID-19 patients in Hong Kong who have been vaccinated.
Data from the study showed that three doses of either the Sinovac or Comirnaty vaccines have similar effectiveness against severe disease and mortality caused by COVID-19.
For the prevention against mortality, both vaccines have over 98 percent effectiveness for patients aged 60 or above. As for the prevention against severe disease, the effectiveness exceeded 97 percent for patients aged 20 to 60 years old and aged 60 and above.
The research team from HKU said that the effectiveness of receiving three doses of COVID-19 vaccine against the virus is obviously regardless of the vaccine type.
On Tuesday, Hong Kong registered 4,296 new COVID-19 cases by nucleic acid tests, and 9,856 additional positive cases through self-reported rapid antigen tests, official data showed. RSS
